Gillian Fortune

- Knowledge Manager

Gillian is an Information Technology (IT) graduate from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

She has extensive data managing and database administrative experience and has been involved in disaster risk research for more than 10 years. She has worked closely with Cape Town Fire Services, City of Cape Town Disaster Management Centre, Western Cape Disaster Management Centre and most Western Cape provincial departments and local municipalities on projects related to fires, high impact weather events and droughts.

She is part of the RADAR team, which have been involved in wide-ranging ex-post disaster studies in the Western Cape region of South Africa. In these studies, Gillian has been responsible for secondary data analysis, involved in field-work in at-risk communities, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and facilitated consultative meetings with role-players, i.e. Government Officials, Scientist, and Practitioners.

In her role as Knowledge Manager, she is responsible for making research outputs accessible to all stakeholders. She is also part of the Periperi U secretariat, see http://www.riskreductionafrica.org/. As a secretariat member, her main responsibility is to track and monitor the outputs from the 12 universities in the consortium, as per the donor’s requirements.
