Three short courses are now open for applications:

 

DISASTERS AND DEVELOPMENT

Aim: To introduce basic disaster risk management principles and concepts, demonstrating the importance of risk reduction in development and planning

Learning outcomes: Participants will understand the urban risk environment in South Africa, the linkages between disasters and development, and the tools for reducing risk developmentally. Participants will also be familiar with relevant concepts and terminology and the global and South African policy context.

Duration: 3 days

Cost: R3 300. R2 000 for registered Stellenbosch University students

Format: Online

Running: 12-14 October 2021. Applications close 5 October

 


 

COMMUNITY RISK ASSESSMENT

Aim: To provide participants with the skills needed to under take community-based risk assessments, particularly in disaster-prone informal settlements.

Learning outcomes: Participants will understand the principles and role of community-based risk assessment in disaster risk reduction and development planning; have the skills needed to under take participatory risk assessments; and to write up and present findings for different audiences.

Duration: 3 days

Cost: R4 120. R3 500 for registered Stellenbosch University Students

Format: In-person

Running: 9-11 November 2021. Applications close 2 November 2021.

 


 

NEW: INTRODUCTION TO DATA AND RESEARCH

Aim: To provide foundational knowledge on the kinds of information available to assess disaster risk, where to find information and basic data col lection tools.

Learning outcomes: Participants will understand basic research principles and methods, including par ticipatory research tools, and will be able to identify, source and work with the information needed to assess risk at a local level . They will also be familiar with working with and interpreting secondary data, aerial photography and maps.

Duration: 3 Days

Cost: R4 120. R3 500 for registered Stellenbosch University Students

Format: In-person

Running: 16-18 November 2021. Applications close 9 November 2021.
