Short Courses

 

We currently offer four short course programmes:

 

COMMUNITY RISK ASSESSMENT

Format: In-person. All COVID-19 protocols will be observed.

Duration: 3 or 5 days depending on fieldwork component.

Focus: This programme aims to provide participants with the skills needed to undertake community-based risk assessments, particularly in disaster-prone informal settlements.

Learning outcomes: After completing the programme, participants will understand the principles and role of community-based risk assessment in disaster risk reduction and development planning; have the skills needed to undertake participatory risk assessments; and to write up and present findings for different audiences.

Certification: This course is quality-assured and accredited by the University of Stellenbosch and endorsed by the Disaster Management Institute of South Africa.

DISASTERS AND DEVELOPMENT

Format: Online.

Duration: 3 days.

Focus: This course focuses on strengthening disaster risk management in the African context, with an emphasis on mitigating urban risks.

Learning outcomes: On completion of the programme, participants will understand the urban risk environment on the continent, and South Africa, in particular; the linkages between disasters and development and the importance of a developmental approach to risk reduction, as well as the tools for reducing risk developmentally. Participants will also be familiar with relevant concepts and terminology and global and South African policy context, including the requirements of South Africa’s Disaster Management Act and Disaster Management Framework.

Certification: This course is quality-assured and accredited by the University of Stellenbosch and endorsed by the Disaster Management Institute of South Africa.

INTRODUCTION TO DATA AND RESEARCH

Format: In-person. The format of the programme will depend on demand and COVID-19 restrictions. All COVID-19 protocols will be observed.

Duration: 3 days

Focus: This short course aims to provide foundational knowledge on the kinds of information available to assess disaster risk, where to find information and basic data collection tools.

Learning outcomes: After completing the course, participants will understand basic research principles and methods, including participatory research tools, and will be able to identify, source and work with the information needed to assess risk at a local level. They will also be familiar with working with and interpreting secondary data, aerial photography and maps.

Certification: This course is quality-assured and accredited by the University of Stellenbosch and endorsed by the Disaster Management Institute of South Africa.

DISASTER RISK FINANCING

Format: Online

Duration: 1 day

Focus: The course aims to introduce participants to key concepts and instruments used in financing of disaster shocks. It will also provide a forum for participants to engage with best practice in this area. It is taught in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s Business School.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course participants will be equipped to reflect on lessons for managing disaster risk and disaster financing within their own contextual environments. Participants will also understand how to advocate for disaster risk management and its financing with key stakeholders.

Certification: Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
